Picking The Right Auger for Ice fishing

If you plan to fish for largemouth bass or other fish during the colder months you’ll need the right auger for ice fishing. An auger can make it easier to get through the thick ice and use your bass baits or other gear to catch your fish. Here’s how to pick the right auger for ice fishing.
Before You Go Fishing
Before you go ice fishing you’ll need to ensure you have the right fishing license. Check you gear and if you’re bass fishing make sure you have the right bass baits, lures for bass and other gear you’ll need for a successful fishing trip. Always tell someone where you’re going and another thing you should do is take a cellphone or other electronic device with you for safety in case you get lost.  To get through the ice you’ll need a good auger. Always check the ice for thickness before you step on it to ensure the ice is in fact thick enough to support your weight.
Augers
You will need to decide between a manual, electric or a gas auger. The manual auger will obviously take more work to get through the ice. If you’re physically fit this won’t be a problem for you. If you’re older you might want to go with the gas or electric auger to save yourself from the workout but it’s up to you.
Manual Auger
The manual auger is the most common and you’ll use it to drill holes in the ice so you can get to the largemouth bass or other fish you’re after. This cаn be quite a chore if the ice is thick and you don’t have the strength to use the auger. These augers are cheap at about $75 dollars so if you’re on a budget, they are the way to go.
Gas Auger
This will get you into the ice quickly and if you don’t have a lot of time to fuss with a manual auger, then this is the way to go. All you do is drop your lures for bass or other fishing gear in the water and start fishing. A gas auger is heavy so you’ll need a snow machine to carry it. You can also make big holes with this type of auger.
Electric Augers
These are on par with the gas augers but they are better for the environment and they are quiet to operate. They rely on battery power so ensure yours has a full charge before fishing. The auger will decrease in effectiveness as it loses power. Make sure you have extra charged batteries with you.
The Choice is Yours
For most people the gas or electric auger is going to be your best bet. If you want to fish old school and have the strength for it then the manual auger is best. The manual auger is perfect for ice that’s not too thick but if the ice is thick they can be a bit of a chore. So now that you have an idea of the auger to buy grab your fishing license and start fishing!
